Water neck interchange?

Ok, I need a water neck for the 390 i'm about to swap into my truck. It has a 1964 Thunderbird intake manifold on it so I walked into the local parts house and asked for one for a 64 T-bird. Apparently it'll cost $20 and take a week to get, but he said they could get one in 2 days for a 76 pickup and it'll cost $7.

So here's my question:

Does anyone know the difference between the waterneck for a 76 f150 and one for a 64 TBird? Is it a detail difference like the one for a 76 has a port for an EGR switch or will they not bolt in place of one another?

Doesn't the thermostat size change right around that '64 timeframe or just before?

Someone'll be along shortly

The earlier water necks use a bigger thermostat, and they won't interchange with a later part. I don't know if a housing from a '64 Galaxy would be any different from a housing from a '64 T-Bird, but you could check.

Allright, so if the spare thermostat I have for my 67 T-bird fits the hole in the intake correctly then the later waterneck should work, correct?

EDIT: And i called the parts house about the neck for a 64 Galaxie and apparently they have one of those on the shelf. Any idea what the difference between a galaxie and bird housing would be?

(I'm going to add that this motor has never had a neck on it so long as i've owned it, so i have no clue what it's supposed to look like)

Should be no difference in size between the 64 Bird and 64 Gal housings. All used the larger diameter stat until late 66 or so. Forget offhand the exact timeframe there. The 318 Mopar stat is the correct size for the larger hole FE intakes and housings. Most parts places only list the newer smaller dia stat for the FE.

NO water neck (t/stat housing) on these cars...they used a surge tank (8A080) which bolts directly to the engine. The t/stat fits into the surge tank. The larger t/stat is used on cars till 1965.

Last year for the surge tank: T-Bird = 1966, Galaxie = 1964

FE F Series trucks used the larger thermosat 1965-67.

So what you're saying is the 64 bird has a tank that bolts to the intake where the water neck should?

So a 64 galaxie water neck (or 65, whichever saw the end of the tank) would replace the tank and let me just use normal radiator hoses and the larger thermostat, right?

While a larger t/stat housing was used, it was only larger inside, the outside is the same dimensions and takes the same gasket = D1PZ-8255-A

Another question-
so since on the Bird intake a thermostat was not originally designed to go right up against it, should the hole be correct to accept the large thermostat?

Picture this...surge tank has the same dimensions where it bolts to the engine as a water neck does. Therefore, the t/stat fits into the space in the surge tank, (element towards engine) and against the engine. You will need the larger neck to make this work, otherwise the smaller t/stat wont seat properly.

WHOA!

Lets start over, I just noticed you are using just exactly what? a 64 390 TB engine in a 76 truck?

OK here's the deal...get a t/stat neck for a 1965/67 352 TRUCK. And use the large t/stat..that's all you need to do.

C4TZ-8592-B is the correct original Ford part number that was used on F100/350's....1965/67....for the larger t/stat housing. This will work just fine with the TB intake manifold...no problem.

Parts houses like NAPA can cross this number over to another housing maker.

Sorry for all the confusion...

Well yes that's right but there was no mention of using a tank... just the housing which lots have done as a replacement. But I was thinking of that!! LOL
