1988 power window problems
My son's 1988 Bronco II is having problems with the passenger power window in that will will not go up unless it is helped, where it will remain. It goes down fine, just not up. The motor is not running by itself, so I suspect that the motor is just dying out. I've read the other posts on similar problems which seem to point to the regulator, motor, plastic gear or motor bushings. Until I can open the door to confirm the real problem, does anyone know if the motor and/or gear assembly for the 1986 Bronco and older Broncos is the same as the 1988? I seem to be able to find the older window motor, but it is harder more costly to find the 1988 motor and I can't find the gear assembly. Also, does anyone know if the gear assembly is available without the motor? I am trying to determine whether I should, based upon the age of the unit, just replace all the parts in the system or just the individual bad parts. Your experiences would be helpful.v Thanks.

You can get the gear assembly at most any auto parts store. They say the motors are different, as well as the gear assemblies, but my passenger side gear assembly was replaced with one of the "older" ones, I believe. I don't know if it's a matter of a different motor rating or what, but all of 'em I've seen look the same and bolt up the same. Usually, it's the gear kit that eats itself first... if things bind up, then the motor may burn up, but it's usually the gear kit that goes first, in my experience. I have a feeling I need to either lube up or do the same overhaul on my driver's door before too long. It's binding and has to be helped down... not up. One note on doing any of this, though... you will want to locate the bolt heads for the motor / gear assembly and drill holes in your inner door sheetmetal to use a deepwell socket or socket and extension (1/4" drive, forget the socket size...) unless you have really thin and small hands or really long ratcheting combo / box wrenches. Even my scrawny arms and hands got pretty ate up when I did my passenger's side! Hope this helps

You can use a flat-head screwdriver or small scraper/putty knife. I didn't have any of those tools for the longest time and used what I had and did as best I could. They can be a pain in the butt to remove sometimes. If you break any of the plastic pieces, you can get new ones at any auto parts store usually.

I have put full sized Bronco window motors into my BII. The only difference was the pigtail/connector end and wire length. Other then that it was a bolt in. I suspect the only differences in all the years were the connectors.
Same as door lock cyl, once you ditch the cam, a van door cyl fits a BII or a F-150.
Many basic components are the same except for part numbers and superficial details and even have the same mounting holes and and can be interchanged. The reason I mention this is because if you go junkyard hunting with a battery and jumper wires, it is easy enough to find a pass. side motor in a vehicle with A/C that has seen little use. Just look for a vehicle without the streak marks engrained into the glass from road dirt and rubber wiper.

Yes, plus, if I remember correctly (I did it 6+ years ago) the only difference between the full size and BII was the length of the power cable, so I only had to plastic tie it out of the way. Which got me to thinking about the shocks my beater needed, and then the tail lamp sockets, then the ...

I ask these questions, because my drivers door window won't go up or down without help.

Is there any way to determine if its just the 9 tooth gear without pulling the components out? My 90 BII driver side window rolls down, but not up. I pulled off the door panel and inspected it, the motor seems to be running fine both up and down, and the large gear that is visible has some vibration to it when the up button is pressed, but it doesn't seem to be gripping the gear on the motor. Or did I just answer my own question? Is that what yours was doing thatch?
