4 Wheel drive Q
Ok guys. I need a little help understanding the 4wheel drive system in this thing. Now when I push the 4 wheel drive button the transfer case then moves the front drive draft the hubs engage and there I go. Correct? I was changing front brakes yesterday and I notice when my truck was in the air that if I spun my tire forward my drive shaft turned. When I spun it backward I heard a click and it then stoped turning. Both tires did this. Now I have not had it in 4wd for about a month or so. Why would this be? Is this normal or are my hubs no disengaging correctly? Also if my hubs didnt disengage when I was driving backwards why would they do it when it was in the air? What damage could this cause. I just got back from a trip doing about 90mph the whole way. Any help would be appreciated guys. Thanks.

Sounds like a lubrication problem maybe. How do the hubs look inside? Lack of grease may cause them to NOT disengage right away. I had this problem on my '92 and till I got it fixed, had to rock the steering wheel from left to right while I was backing up so they would disengage.

for around $55 you can replace those automatic hubs with a decent set of Milemarker manuals. I replaced mine in Feb. and haven't had a single problem with them engaging when they aren't supposed to be or not engaging when they are. When I need them I simply turn them to lock and can drive away without having to reverse. The manuals are inexpensive and much less troublesome. Good Luck! P.S. the manuals install in about 20 min or less depending on if you need to read the directions or not.
