hey yall, I have a 1979 F100 w/ 302 and 3 speed manual. when I shift at higher rpms (3,000+) and under heavy acceleration, and when I let off the throttle sharply, my truck backfires. It sounds (from inside the cab) like a shotgun blast under my truck. I thought it was cool, and its fun 2 scare people goin down the road, but my more adult side says it needs 2 b fixed and its facination has worn away (it sounds really awesome in tunnels and overpasses too) I have adjusted my carbs mixture screws and leaned the carb out a lil bit hopin for better gas mileage also, but it still didnt solve this problem, I have also been told it may be an EGR or AIR injection problem. I dunno what it comes from but I know its not good and both my cat and muffler are blow out inside and I wanna get it fixed b4 I put money into my exhaust system.............. any help is greatly appreciated, thanx
Probably a result of a rich fuel mixture of some sort and/or an exhaust leak or a leak in the emmissions system or an engine vacuum leak in the vacuum system.

I would agree with the exhaust leak, but any combination of the above might cause these symtoms.
When was the last time your carb was clean or overhauled?
well, it sounds like its inside the cat where its exploding, cuz its sounds like its gonna blow a hole thru my pass side floorboard, and as far as I can tell no leaks, I covered my exhaust pipe end and cant find anywhere that its blowin out and the engine starts to struggle when I do that. Vacuum leaks could be a possibilty, and I kinda know how these engines werk, but what exactly does the air pump do and how does it werk with the egr?? and the carb was just rebuilt this summer, cleaned and all fresh internals, we did drill out the jets slightly tho, dunno if that would cause my problem or not
Also check those emission lines from the cylinder to the air pump, any loose connections in the emission system will cause a back fire. Check all connections.
How are the spark plugs, are they all burning clean. Remove and inspect.
the plugs are clean, and the lines r tight, one is kinda not goin 2 anything tho.......... hey Mil, if ya get a chance I need some AIR pump, vacuum line diagrams, thanx
