There are two little plastic "hooks" on the inside of the console. One is marked with the blue arrowhead in the photo below. Push and hold them both toward the outside of the truck. Pull down to release the rear of the console. The front is held in place with two little "push in, pull out" springy clips that are released by just pulling straight down. Put a little dab of Vaseline on those clips "for next time".
The display will remain in place on the headliner when you pull the console. The plastic is just a bezel.

I an not sure if my problem is the same as the rest of yours. My overhead display seems to be on dim all the time. It is barely readible in sunny conditions. I can see it fine at night in a dark cab. During the day with the head lights off its barely there, I have to shield it with my hand to read it. Any ideas??????
Hey, I tried this mod on my Excursion, and it doesn't work... and ideas?
For some weird reason the headlight sense wire that goes to the computer (blue with red tracer) on my excursion is hot all the time, regardless of headlight switch position and when i cut it, the entire overhead console shut down. I spliced it back and its OK now. But, I don't know which wire to cut, and I really want to do this mod. I checked each wire in the little bundle for some change between headlights on and headlights off, and I nothing seemed to change. Any ideas on which wire to cut? Its a 2000 Excursion if it matters...
BTW, the computer funcions normally (bright when headlights off, dim when headlights on), so its not a stuck switch or something
Check each wire for changes while rolling your instrument panel lights "bright-dim" wheel on the headlight switch. That might help you identify the sense wire.
Just out of curiosity, was the wire you cut in the lower row, most rearward position of the connector?
