I read this thread with great trepidation after my '95 Explorer started flashing its OD light at me a few days ago. Today I took it to the shop that had installed a rebuilt tranny last November. They pulled the codes and got a 335 (EGR sensor circuit voltage higher or lower than expected during self-test) in addition to the OD code.
The boss checked his references and told me the EGR code code be triggered by something as simple as a peice of crud in the EGR valve and that, in turn, could trigger a false OD fault code.
He reset the codes and, after a road test pronounced, the problem solved.
We shall see ...

Matt

I'm new on here so I can't directly contact you, but my newly purchased 99 explorer has had this blinking light once...have only had this one for 5 days, and if this means more to come, I want to fix it before it gets worse.

I guess my questions are:

Do you think this means I have the same problem?

How do I get my hands on this "tutorial" of yours?

-Thanks

How about this....I had the trans. in my '95 replaced with a Ford remanufactured unit less than three months ago for the second time (the first one lasted ~100K miles with me getting the flashing o/d light every 10K miles or so) and less than 4K miles later, I'm getting the light again with some new quirks. The old trans would get the occasional downshift clunk that would trigger the code and then it would shift firmly 'til it was reset. Driving into work this morning, just before the code was set, the trans. wouldn't shift into overdrive. Once tripped, it wouldn't shift out of first unless I let off the gas (shifting it manually didn't work, either.) After a few miles, it started shifting again, o/d light flashing and really harshly.

I'd imagine the rebuild has the updated parts, but am not about to crawl under it to find out while it still has a warranty. Sorry I had no tech to offer....but I thought the rest of you with better luck might revel in how ridiculous these Ford automatics are

Hi all,

New to the Forum and not very mechanically oriented. Meaning, I would not be doing any trans repairs myself.

I also have a flashing OD off light with different symptoms. My truck doesn't go into OD after the engine warms. In the morning, at first start, at highway speeds the truck will shift into OD at about 55 mph (dropping to about 2000rpms). As it warms the shift into OD moves to about 60 mph. And then finally as temps heat the trans sorta hiccups and the light starts flashing and it won't shift into OD at all, running about 3000 rpms at 60 mph instead of a much lower rpm when in OD.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

AAMCO wants about $2000 to rebuild.

Appreciate any help or thoughts offered.

Thanks........Tony

Hi Matt,

I've read all the posts as suggested. And from what I can see the consensus is to replace the Valve Body Gasket.

What about the filter, valve body separator plate and the blow-off valve kit? At one point these were also indicated for replacement. Should all or any of these be replaced?

And finally, as I'll be getting a shop to do the work, do you have any idea as to costs of parts and time involved?

I appreciate your time and help.

Thanks........Tony

I got an approximate price of $500 to replace the valve body gasket, Separator plate and blow-off valve kit. This sounds reasonable if it's a 4-5 hour job.

Also, the mechanic did a scan and showed me the results. The trans isn't holding 2nd or 5th gears. Does this change the diagnosis at all?

Thanks.

well, if the pressure is blowing off out of the valve body, it wont hold gears and or not go into them

Just a note of thanks. I had the above work done yesterday and all seems to be well.

Thanks for the input.
