Speed

I've been cruising along to and from work doing a comfortable 50 mph. No freeway driving. People pass me like I'm parked, I do live in So. Cal. so thats normal. Well I pushed my truck up to 60 mph. and all that iron moving that fast felt great but I started catching up to traffic so I backed off, When I got home I had my wife drive side by side in her car to give me a reading on how fast my truck is actually going. Well at 50 mph I'm doing 65 mph!!! at 60 I was going 78 I think my speedometer is off a bit. What needs to be done to correct this?

This is a thread from this forum I found a while back.
LOL, still haven't gotten mine fixed, but put it on a dyno so I'd know what speeds I was really going. (I hate getting tickets...
Good luck,

Pretty much follow the link Judi posted. Ford still sells the driven gears thankfully. I had to pick one up 2 years ago and it was $10.00 out the door for a C-6.

mine says 51 when im going 55.
I dont think mine is enough to worry about. it keeps that same scale for the entire range.

Does that apply to the ford-o-matic tranny as well?

Robert, All tranny/transfer cases have a speedo drive gear, so while the answer is yes it is not specific to that tranny.

All of the speedo cables have gears on the end of them. They have different number of teeth on them. A single tooth is worth about 5mph.

A speedo that is 10 mph off needs a 2 tooth count change. Changing rear ends is the biggest culprit for throwing the reading off. IMHO
