I recently bought an 86 f150 with a 300 straight 6. It popped through the carb, and ive started it a few times and driven it since then, without the pop, but lurches a little till it got warm. Then I replaced the battery, cap, rotor, plugs, wires, and now it doesnt start. It sounds like it wants to but then it sounds bogged down and everynow and then shoots gas out of the top of the carb, any suggestions?
Timing could be one reason, but if it's cold and it leans out, it will pop back up through the carb too.
Look at the top of the carb with the engine off and the air cleaner off. You should have a flapper door up on top of the carb. That is the choke. With the engine cold from sitting overnight, you should be able to go into the cab, press the gas to the floor once, and then go out and the flapper door should be shut.
If it's not shut, then the choke is not working. Getting the choke to work can open up another whole can of worms, but the first thing to try is if you have a round black piece on the side of the carb, you can loosen and adjust it if it has screws.
Loosen the screws so you can turn the round black piece. Then while holding the throttle about 3/4 open, turn the round back housing till the choke flapper just shuts. Tighten it down and try it.
