Front axle will not engage. Checked all fuses. Light on inst panel does not come on. Tried Auto 4WD, Hi4wd, Lo4wd. Nothing happens. Was on ice and had to be towed to dry ground. All was working last summer.
Put the selector in 4Hi and check for 12Vdc on the brown wire @ the T/C, if there is non you either have a fuse blown or the shift motor is out of sync.
This T/C has to be activated on a regular basis(monthly) to maintain the contact plate/wiper contacts clean.
I have a 2002 Explorer 4x4 and the 4wd wouldn't work, i took it to the dealership and they had to replace the electronic shift the electrial connection was bad. But now that i got that fixed the 4wd engages everytime i push the button.
Check the thread titled "Common 4x4 problems" on this forum. It covers the topic quite well. In summary, the possibilities are:
1. A bad/faulty sensor.
2. The 4wd dash switch.
3. The 4wd control module.
4. The transfer case motor.
5. The hubs.
6. A short.
I had a short in the 4x4 wiring in my 2002 Explorer.
A mechanic should be able to get some idea of what the problem is by checking the OBD codes.
