Fuel filter questions....

Fuel filter questions....
With my 01 I try to stay on top of my fuel economy and lately I have noticed it dropping a good bit. I replace the fuel filter right after I bought the truck 15-20k miles ago, so I dont know if it needed replaced at that time or not. A buddy of mine suggested that I replace it again to help with the fuel economy. He reccomened that I change it when I change my oil, but I dont know if thats too often. I know the maintance schedule doesnt say to replace it that often, but what do you guys suggest?
