Wassup Ya'll, Just registerd yesterday, thought I'd make a post and introduce my self. Just bought the other day an '85 F-250 4x4 Lariat Supercab with the 6.9L Diesel. First Truck that I've ever owned my self, though I drove Tow Truck for a few years so this big boy dont bother me none.
I did have a question though, what kind of things should I keep an eye on with this old of a truck??? After I picked it up I drove it about an hour and a half back to base, (I'm in the Navy stationed at Whidbey Island NAS Washington,) and it drove really nice, motor ran great, trans shifted good and the brakes were nice and firm, no play in them. Just wondering what I should look for.
Welcome! And if you don't mind an old Army sailor saying it (yep, the Army has squids too), thanks for your service. Squid!
The usual old truck stuff of course. Your truck WILL use some oil and that's pretty normal. If you're used to a modern car where the hood stays sealed between oil changes, get used to regularly checking the oil. I bought my '86 in '87 and it used oil from day one. We used to call it "upper cylinder lubrication." How much is variable, usually increasing with age, but don't be too alarmed at 1 qt every thousand miles for a tired motor.
