Question Truck wont start...

I went out to start my truck and bingo.. It just cranks over. It got to 5 degrees last night with strong winds. The truck is left outside. I forgot to plug it in too. So do you think the diesel is jelled? I just plugged it in and im hoping it will start by noon.. I never had this happen before either. Jeff

Doubt it's the fuel gelling. You should have been running winter blend for several months now, and winter blend fuel doesn't gel at 5 degrees.

Most common problem like this would be the glow plug relay (GPR). These go out all the time. The good thing is they are cheap and easy to replace. You can test it first and see if that's the problem. Grab a multimeter, turn the key to the run position, and check both large terminals on the GPR to see if they are both registering power. If one registers 11+ volts and the other doesn't, then you have a bad GPR. If you don't have a multimeter handy, get a screwdriver and with the key in the run position, jumper the two large terminals with the screwdriver for about 30 seconds or so (you'll see a spark, don't worry). After the 30 seconds, try and crank the truck. If it starts up, then the GPR is bad.

Hope this helps.

I plugged it in for the last hour, i just went out to start it cycled glow plugs 5 times and it go going, very rough at first, probably due to the cranking from before. my truck is a 02 with 112k on it. Maybe i should just replace the glow plug relay anyway? and have the glow plugs checked out. The relay is easy to replace ? I can start there. thanks Jeff

An hour plugged in is going to help but you really need to have it plugged in longer. At least 2 hours, 3 is better. I would definitely would check out the glow plug relay. Because a 5 degrees it should of started. Not very happily, but started no less.

Check your glow plug relays as noted earlier and also look at your batteries if you have not changed them. I just had to change out both batteries and GPR on mine due to the cold the age. Not changed since new. Also had the same problem with starting and finally at work when the temp did not get out the teens the truck would not start until I plugged it in for 3 hours.
