Timing?

Hey All,
I got a 78 Ford Bronco with a 429 Cobra Jet. I have been having this problem lately where the engine surges while it sits at idle. There is no patern to it it just seems to do it whenever it deems necessary. Is this a timing problem? I have tried timing it many times but could never seem to get the timing just right. I dont know the exact timing degree for the engine, and I have been told that since I have MSD Off Roda ignition that I can't time it like normal. Also while I am driving the engine will for no reason at all start chatering just out of the blue and only for a minute, like the timing slipped or something. Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated. And one last thing, my truck runs normal at about 190 degrees temperature wise and just as of lately I cant get any heat to come out of the dash. I checked all my linkages and they all seem to hooked up and tightened down. I thought it might have something to do with the thermostat but the temperature still registers on my gauge which means its flowing right? Any bits of help would be great thanks.

Timing?

Sounds more like the carburetor idle system. What carburetor are you running?

you might also pull the timing cover and take a look at the chain. if its worn out the timing will not stay consistent.also if your carb is smaller then a 750 could also be causing issues.

Timing?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 31-Oct-02 AT 09:22 PM (EST)]Hey Guys,
I am running a Carter AFB I think its a 725 of 750cfm carb running an electric choke. I discnnected the choke once and it still had the problem of the idle picking up then dropping back down. I thought it might be the timing as well but I just had the engine rebuilt about 11,500 miles ago. I didnt have this problem before the engine was rebiult and I thought the timming chains were pretty stout.
Do you guys think it might be a vacume leak or the timming advance going out? Thanks for the help I look forward to hearing back to you guys.

Oh ya and one more thing. Remeber how I said theres something wrong with my heat not comming all the way through. Well when I finished running my truck today I grab ahold of the hoses one stayed hot and the other was not so hot. DO you thing this might eb a related problem having to do with the distrubutor not turning properly or the water pump? The truck never over heats though

Most likely a valley pan/intake gasket leak. If the heads were planed, you need to have the intake done too. As far as heat, if the truck ever had a/c, it has a valve in the heater line. If this valve is closed, it will do just what you said. They often corroded and stuck in the most inconvenient setting. Otherwise, my best w.a.g. is a plugged heater core.

Jared,
The intake is an Edelbrock intake, should I go in and get that planned out or do they come from the factory already done? Or should I just look at replacing the gasket or tightening the bolts down?
As for the plugged heater core, is there any simple way of unplugging it? And what might it be plugged with?
