Well, now that I have my pan off, I'm waiting to install my new trans lines, and drill a hole for my temp gauge, I figured I'd ask you guys what type of trans fluid you run.
I've always used chevron ATF in my Chevys but I'm new to diesel and wasn't sure if there is some better stuff to be running in a E4OD.
The transmission was new about one year and 10K ago. I know not to run a Mercon V, but any other suggestions?
I use the Amsoil ATF in all my trucks that I have owned for 10 wow make that 11 years now. Time flys! Oh, well I can say it does run a little cooler maybe 5-10 degrees. But most of the oil is pumped through a hot radiator so the notice of cooler is tough. It does take longer for my gauge to climb on my summer truck which is closer to stock. I disconnected the transmission lines from my radiator on the winter truck and routed them through a huge cooler for plowing and towing etc. Barely gets over 130 degrees now.
The oil stays very clean and is a bright red (stays that way too). I have been happy with ATF Synthetic and recommend it also engine and gear oil too. The brand name well that is and individual choice.
Except their marketing scheme. I like the product but I don't like the "CULT" like thinking and brand bashing they do. Would much prefer "Our product is really good and we will stand behind it". But I overlook that BS and just buy their products because it is good stuff and had great experiences with it.
I put that stuff in everything, I've never had a single transmission problem on anything I've ever used it in since I started using it, from racing snowmobiles to my Diesel.
For example, I started using Amzoil ATF in my girlfriend's Honda Civic at around 100K miles, usually the automatic tranny's start to have problems by now for sure, 200K and still shifts like brand new, never slips, not a single problem, change it every 50K, small car auto tranny's almost always have problem before 200K.
as for the snowmobiles, everyone I know uses it, and everyone that uses it drives really hard and never has any problems from friction or heat, I dont know anyone that has ever blown anything that it was used in, apparently it's used in a lot of racing applications...
You can put that stuff in anything you drive, beat the *&%! out of it and not ever have to worry about damage from friction etc...
I use amzoil gear lube in my rear diff, use it in my boat motors/outboard lower ends.... the list goes on
It's expensive and worth it because in the long run it's cheaper, the way I see it I'd rather spend 100bucks on tranny fluid then have to spend $1,500 bucks on a new tranny.
I really like the Amsoil and even get it for people who ask and it has performed better than any oil I have tried even Delvac 1 which is mute since that stuff is gone.Your right about the ATF I had an E4OD that use to not back shift when coming to a traffic light the torque was still locked up and would about stall the engine. Pull the shifter in to neutral and then back into drive and away I would go it had conventional oil in it and it was a little nasty. Changed it over to Amsoil ATF new filter has been smooth as silk since.
Chalk it up to Amsoil oil maybe tranny service (definately). But 100 bucks spent to save 1500 why not?

YUP, and don't forget the highly inflated prices for NON-API certified products just because of the pyramid (MLM) structure!! Beware of their Amsoil ATF, in the specifications, they say it meets Mercon V, and Mercon SP specifications (which is impossible BTW), but in their ATF applications page, they don't list Mercon SP at all under Ford......
Some are only making the Mercon V, like Mobile 1. They quit making Mercon. I tried to get it the last time I serviced the trans and couldn't find it. I thought they were just out, but found out the other day they were not making anymore.
amsoil atf EXCEEDS both mercon v and sp specs, best ATF out there in any condition, if something calls for ATF use amsoil ATF, mercon V mercon II who cares what are you scared about? It didn't call for gear oil did it? Whoever says not to use it because it originally called for something else... I'll use this analogy, it's like not using 10w-30 in a car that called for 5w-30 because the factory said use 5w. I guess some people just like going by 'minimum' requirements.....

Sorry, the specs (like viscosity - cSt@100C) on Mercon V, and Mercon SP DO NOT overlap....typical lies and deceit from Scamsoil!!!!
