The xlt designation is a trim package designation. According to the 1991 brochure I have for Ford Bronco's there were 4 trim levels that year. Custom, XLT, EB and Silver Anniversary, obviously the SA was only offered the one year. It shows the standard engine in the Custom and XLT as the 4.9 6. The EB standard was the 5.0 with manual trans and the SA was a 5.0 with the E4OD, aything else would have been optional.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 30-Oct-02 AT 05:15 PM (EST)]I can't give a difinitive answer but I can tell you that my '92 XLT has the 302 and the E4OD. And according to Ford's Customer service hotline, the truck was bought from a dealer stock not custom ordered.
We have all looked at window stickers before. The base truck comes stripped or in this case a custom trim. When you look at the sticker it says 5.0 or 5.8 or whatever else is on the truck and then shows some price related to that upgrade. I am quite sure there are not too many 4.9 Bronco's out there but Ford shows that as the base engine and then charges for the upgrades. The XLT designation was a trim package designation, just like the ranger and explorer were trim packages at one time on earlier F-150's. The nite trim package if I remember correctly gave you color matched bumpers a monochromatic paint and some decals that said nite on the back. I also believe it still had the XLT designation though for the interior trim package. I also think that later the custom option was replaced by an XL designation. You can find those on ebay usually used by the border patrol or a city. Thats the only time I have seen Bronco's with 4.9's , manual trans and vinyl interior.
Nites also had all chrome blacked out (except SOME door lock cylinders) and stripes that faded from blue to pink or purple with "Nite" at the back. The t/g trim panel was deleted. It was very similar to the XLT Sport package and the Lightning package (but of course without the Lightning engine upgrade).
