I have just a little rust on the passenger rear fender and wondering what would be the best method to stop the rust and cover it up. Has anyone tried the "Rust Bullet" that is advertised on the website. Fender flares aren't an option because it is just over one fender.
The only way to do it right is weld in a patch panel and repaint, or replace the box side. I've heard the patch panels aren't as thick and have the potential to rust quicker. I had it done to an 86 though and no rust yet after 5 years.
i agree cut and replace. i've seen to many friends up here in the snow(rust) belt sand and bondo then repaint, almost every other year. lmc has them and the local company here raybuck has a good product too.
If just really small spot you could get fixed. Then keep upper wheel well clean and spray old oil underneath. usually lasts about 2 years then get patch welded in . Thats what I do I find that you weld small panel is in it will just rust next to in while. Only option is to replace large section or get fixed every year.by time other starts to rust the inner . I traveled 500 miles one way to get my near rust free 94 f150 in need of motor . And I take to shop every spring to get nicks etc fixed . good luck
I would suggest you sand blast the rusted area really well, then fill with fiberglass body filler (not Bondo or light weight filler),prime with a good quality primer sealer, then repaint. I have done body and paint work for 12 years now and can tell you that if you do a very thurough job of removing the rust to start with this proccess will last a very long time.
I have a 94 F150 and my box sides over the rear wheels are rotted bad. I live in Canada and up here they dump alot of salt on the roads...can you order just the pieces that cover that small flare or do you need to order half box sides?
You can get small patch panels that are basically top of fender well (2ft x 6"). Or large that would replace whole wheel well and extend a ways both directions.(4ft + and from bottom bed to side detail on top ) And there are whole sides. I use raybuck.com also but I live 45 miles from them .
I used POR-15 (a competitor to Rust Bullet) on the frame to my truck. It sure looks nice but it hasn't been on long enough for me to make a final judgment on its rust inhibiting properties. It claims to seal the rust and prevent additional rust from forming. Nothing has bbbled up as of yet.
If you were to use it on sheet metal, I would think you would have to get both sides to do a good job. it is also UV sensitive so you would have to paint over it with something. If I remember right the Rust Bullet is silver in color.
Thanks guys that's the info i needed...too bad we don't have a Raybuck up here in Canada...we do have a company called "Across Canada" and they sell aftermarket body panels...gonna have to give them a call...the truck looks bad driving it around and people pointing at it LOL
