hey what's up guys.....Im new here and Im looking to buy a Bronco for a daily driver, and plan on building it into a prerunner with long travel/full cage/glass...all the goodies.....anyway
I would really like to have a manual transmission......preferrably the 5 speed......how rare are they??? ...in my search through the classifieds the past few days I have only come across one five speed...and maybe two four speeds.....in my area
Should I hold out for one??? search harder??.........or should I just get a nice automatic in good condition and when it croaks, drop in a 5-speed???.......
anyone know where to find figures on how many vehicles were sold each year...?? automatics vs. manuals???
yo,
Autotrader has an "advanced" search engine where you can select the tranny, but not the engine.
http://www.autotrader.com/
btw, saw only one manual tranny in 92-96 years in zip 21131 @ Autotrader (and NONE in Edmunds search engine); had over 100k miles tho! Get the VIN breakout so you can determine if ths bronco has the 5.8.
I saw new 96's (when we were shopping for our 96 5.0 in 96 ) w/5.8 and manual tranny on a just one lot; all were XL's and I believe only one was an XLT; I also believe that the EB models in 96 only had E4OD's.
I also searched the Big Bronco section of Superford's My Big bronco and found none w/the eng/train listed. None for sale in MBB either; didn't ck this site's classified's yet.
Take a look at Edmund's for standard and optional equipt for the years you are seeking.

I had to look for a while before I found my 5-speed bronco. Even then it was four hours away. I ended up buying a XLT with a 302EFI and the mazda 5-speed with overdrive. I didn't think the 5.8 came with a 5-speed option in later years. I would deffently wait until you find a manual bronco before you buy. But I know I couldn't stand driving a auto for any length of time.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 26-Oct-02 AT 07:30 PM (EST)]I don't know the exact production figures of manual vs. automatic Broncos, but I can tell you production totals from 1987 through 1990 model years. They are : 1987 :57,013
1988 :59,412
1989: 70,156
1990 : 45,861
You won't find a manual 5-speed behind a Bronco with a 5.8L engine, but Broncos equipped with the 5.0L were available with two different 5-speed transmissions, and so was the 4.9L I-6,but that engine was dropped from the Bronco line after the 1992 models. You could always swap a 5-speed manual into your Bronco. The automatics found behind the 5.8L you want were either the C-6 three speed automatic(which has an excellent reputation....),or the later E4OD electronic four speed automatic with overdrive(which has a good reputation). If you are swapping in a late-model 5-speed,you'll probably want the M5OD-HD,with the 5.72:1 first("creeper")gear. This would probably be a nice match for the 5.8L engine.
yo,
I stand corrected. I've looked in my folders for the ad I saved and I thought it was a 5.8 and 5 speed.
We did have a 78 with that combo, so maybe my brain is shot from the exausts I've inhaled over the years.
The ZF S5-42 was the HD 5sp wOD & granny from '88-94; then it was the S5-47 (same speeds). But it's VERY rare to find them in 1/2-ton trucks. The M5OD 1st gear isn't really a granny.
