My '84 F250 had a similar problem until the TPS was
replaced. That cured the super-fast cold idle problem
for me. Mechanic also checked the O2 sensor but it
was OK. This is a carb'd truck with 4-spd. tranny.

No problem. I don't know if that will solve your idle problem.
I hope that it does. I don't know how they test a TPS to see
if it is working OK or not. Maybe by its voltage output?
Anyone know for sure?

i remember my 84 had a vaccum leak which caused this and my oil pressure to skyrocket at idle.

Yeah, I know what you mean. Vac leaks suck... figuratively
and actually. They can be real hard to find sometimes as well.

To properly and accurately test one you need a glitch capture oscilliscope, but you can do almost as well with an analog voltmeter. Connect the red lead to the TPS signal wire (IIRC it's the middle one) and the other to ground. Slowly move the throttle from idle to WOT a few times and watch the needle on the meter. It should move smoothly from about 1V at idle to about 4.5V at WOT. If it bounces around the TPS is bad.

Thanks for the TPS test procedure, SS. That could definitely
come in handy one of these days.

another thing to check would be your fuel pressure regulator, this happened to my 88 when my FPR went out, idled at like 1500 Rpm and then it would idle funny and everything. But it actually sounds like a vacuum leak, or a bad IAC valve.

new iac and the tps fixed the problem except for a slight surging but its very minimal. ive checked all vaccuums but the charcoal canister crap might be a problem. also the map sensor. im gonna replace the map this weekend and see if that helps. thanx much for all your input and stay in touch.

with the surging idle you should seriously look at your FPR, along with the higher idle i got a serious case of surging.
