Turbo update

Don't know the reason, but my turbo has gotten much better. The surging is gone completely. It went from bad to worse to better to worse to non-existing. I dont have anymore drone but the vibration is still there. Must be going crazy or something (about the vibration in the gas pedal). Still have the oil leak at the turbo boot. After towing, there is a strong smell of exaust. My MPG is around 13 to 18 in normal driving and 7 to 11 when towing. Hasent been cold lately for the past three days. Can't tell the color of the exaust either. The turbo has been surging for around 20,000 k. Should I still be worried or leave it be? I have also been doing alot of towing the last couple of weeks. Oh, and I switched to non-synthetic 15w30 oil as well last oil change. Anybody have anything similar happen? I'm boggled at the moment.

I plug it in mostly every night. Usual cold start problems when not plugged in and lots of smoking.

Do you have a strong exhaust smell in the cab?

and the surging quit after you replaced the y-pipe right? The y-pipe leak was affecting your EBP sensor to some degree and causing the surge.
The oil leak is from crankcase ventilation unless you've dont the CCV mod and it will always be there.

I need some clarifications on some of the items mentioned in this thread.

1) With regards to 'strong' exhaust smell: A) What is considered strong? I notice a smell on start-up and maybe sometimes sitting at a light, but I don't know if I'd characterize it as strong. I just figured it was a normal condition of a diesel.
2) I've heard people talk about smoking on cold start-up. Mine 'smokes' on cold day start-ups, but I attribute the 'white smoke' as moisture in the system until it comes up to temp. I'm comforted by the fact it does go away after warm and there is no smoke on warmer days. Am I mistaken?
3) How do you identify a Y-pipe crack? Is it visual?

I'm asking these questions because I had been fighting (initially) a low RPM surge when cold and then one after sustained driving. It has been diagnosed as injectors, then the truck died on me and it was attributed to a bad fuel pump. Currently, I'm experiencing some slight misses on cold morning starts even tho it sits in my garage and probably doesn't get lower than freezing. It's nothing real bad, but with all the issues I've had I am running a little timid. Other than that, it's running decent after warm-up.

I'm sorry if this is a semi-hijack of this thread.

Thanks for any replies.

When we replace the turbo inlet pipe it is ussally a smell complaint first thing in the AM, it is ussually some soot around the flex pipe and possibly on the firewall. It is covered 5yr/100K.. If you are not under warranty you must R&R the turbo to do the job.

Maybe I shouldn't try to type and work. I hate having to quote myself to correct my posts.

I should have asked at what turbo boot you have an oil leak? These are typical on every PSD because of the porosity of the boot material and are normal. If you have a "puddling" leak then it might be something else. Can you get a picture--worth a thousand words as they say.

Well, I can't tell at what boost because I have no guages installed. It is definitly not a puddle of oil. Just under the boot next to the turbo. I check under my truck every day and have not seen any oil puddles whatsoever. I have the new blue colored boot with the orange on the inside. Its just that its been unhooked so many times that I know it needs to be replaced. And I am going to get my turbo replaced tomorrow anyways because the surging did come back after a day of sitting. I guess I should mention from your earlier post that the surging did not go away after I replaced the y-pipe. Just the smell in the cab. SO I will be throwing a 05 turbo into an 04 and see what goes on from there. Still driveable with the current turbo just anonoying as hell. Going to get the boot replaced and some rings that hold the exaust and the y-pipe in place. And anything else as well.
This truck may wish for death bit im going to run it and replace whatever I can to keep it running. Next on the list is a FASS fuel separator/pump. Then bigger injectors from LIPD!
