Went to the local Ford dealer to find out about getting diagnostics done on my '92 XLT. Since the price tag just to hook up their computer to mine and have the two comps. chat for a few about what ails my truck pushes the "ridiculous" envelope, I have decided to invest in a code reading device. Any suggestions as to which maufacturer's code reading equipment is best for the money? I know the self test procedure but really don't relish the idea of sitting there counting the flashes from the dashboard "idiot" light.
Hey greystreak before you spend your money do you have a autozone near buy? They will tell you what codes come up for free!! Alot of other parts stores are offering this service also. I went there the other day because my check engine light came on. The guy came out to the parking lot hooked up the code reader and told me what the code was and what it meant. I remember paying 50 bucks just to have a shop tell you what code was coming up. Also at the autozone website they give you step by step install directions on just about anything they sell.and it is make and model specific. I do not work for autozone I dont even always buy my parts there but they have great services.
Bronco cam,
Thanks so much for the tip. The local Autozone is less than two blocks away. They know me by sight. Just never realized they offered that service.
Hi Wakeboarder, something wrong with you autozone. They are too cheep to open the box on one of the code readers they sell. Try another store, also Checker/Partsamerica and other parts stores will do a code read for free too.
I bought a Scantool reader with Ford and gm modules. It was not the most expensive but it works just fine.
Something important to understand. Just seeing the codes doesn't mean you have the problem diagnosed. You need to understand what sets the codes and why. Just because a code is set, dosn't mean that is the problem. It could be something upstream from the sensor of whatever, that is causing that thing to read or set a fail mode.

Hi, one of the reasons I like owning my own Scantool is I can just leave it installed while trying to track down an intermittent failure. Right now it is hooked up to the pos astro, while trying to trap a very intermittent stall problem. It is set to trigger on failure.
I used it the same way on the Big Red Bronco, a couple of months ago to watch the data stream.
