1984 bronco 302 with a 2bbl carb fails emission testing. Readings; HC 807 ppm should be 220. CO 8.81 % should be 1.2. CO2 9.3% . It has a new air cleaner, new wires, plugs and distributor cap. The mileage is bad about 10mpg. The timing is set at 10 degrees btd center. It blows black smoke when the accelerator is hammered. I have been told the carb needs to be rebuilt, the catalytic converter may be bad. Any help?
I just found out the air pump plumbing is not hooked up to the exhuast system. Where do the pipes connect that come out of the check valves? Catalytic convertor or on the Y pipe? Thanks for the previous help on the other thread.
I just found out that the Y pipe I have is not the right one. There is no catalytic converter as part of the Y pipe. What vehicles have the same setup? Do all the trucks and full size vans use the same setup? I have an 84 Bronco with a 302 2bbl. The Y pipe looks as if it is the same setup as what is on my 89 ford van with a 302 fuel injection.
get the Y pipe and a new cat converter installed and then have the carb gone through (if it doesn't adjust correctly)
The engine is running too rich.....so the carb will need to run leaner...
remember, HC is the unburnt fuel coming out of the engine
in parts per million ppm
CO% is the fuel going into the engine (mixture of air and fuel) if too lean the emissions will be too high and the engine will run too hot....
if too rich the emissions will also be high and the black smoke and teary eyed factor will be there....
CO2 (and H20) are the by products of combustion process....the higher the better....
was this at idle? if so then your carb may need a rebuild or a new one installed....a new cat will put a band aid on the problem and will burn out sooner if the carb isn't feeding the engine right...
if you spend the money now, you won't have to deal with this for a looong time
