VSS going bad?

VSS going bad?
'02 F-250 SD, crew cab, long bed, 5.4L auto.
The speedo cuts out randomly, when it goes to zero the ABS light comes on and the tranny shifting gets quite firm. Then it will just snap right back.
From my Ranger knowledge, this would indicate a problem with the Vehicle Speed Sensor...is that the culprit here as well? All suggestions appreciated.

Ok need a little followup.
From working on Rangers, the sensor I know as the "vehicle speed sensor" is the sensor located on top of the rear end, held in by a single bolt. Am I correct on the F-250 by calling this a VSS?
Neither O'Reilly's, Autozone, or NAPA listed a "Vehicle Speed Sensor" for a 2002 F-250 SD. O'Reilly's came up with something, overnighted it to me, then I got the one out of the truck and they didn't match.
Could someone please give to me a useful source for the VSS? I'm now stuck with no more parts places around here to visit.
BTW, it's a 4.10 LS if that matters.

pfb, could you describe what yours looked like please, or do you have a picture, as I know it's a hard description.
This is the one O'Reilly's gave me that didn't match the one that came out:
