info on 1999-2002PSD

ok im looking to buy a Ford Diesel Truck. im looking at both automatic and 5spd and 6spd. and in a regular cab or super cab. im wondering about the following
auto tranny vs. stick (not doing any towing/hauling)
4X4

what about the engine from what I hear the 7.3L has some problems that need to be worked out.

I will be useing it as a DD about 73miles per day and on the weekends for play.

any info will be helpfull

Welcome to FTE!! if your not doing any hauling or towing i would go with the auto. as for the 7.3 haveing some problems to be worked out... its a great motor, and yes there are a few minor things that you can do yourself like the hutch mod which helps keep alotta air out of the fuel, and the CCV mod which keeps the oily mess outta your intercooler hoses and turbo. search around a little and see what everyone is doing. i went from a gasser to the diesel, and will never go back to a gas motor. just cant beat the power, and the fuel mileage they get. heres a pretty good write up on buyin a 7.3

Welcome to FTE Alex. I have a manual and at times even when towing I wish I had an Auto. I love the fact I don't have to worry about breaking my tranny however it is easier to maintain the peak torque RPM with an auto and you don't have to dump the boost between shifts. The only reason I do not have an auto is because I don't trust them for longevity.

yea true about the boost. but i do like driving a manual better than i do an auto..but ive only driven a gas engine in the manual. i guess im going to have to test both.

I love my auto and never considered a manual. 167000mi and still going. I don't tow anything either but I used to years ago and never a problem.

i have a 6spd they are great for towing but not for accelerating becasue of the boost lost...but it is so fun to power shift and feel like a big rig driver

I would say you will be fine with either one. Which ever you you like better, I have an auto with 137000 miles and orginal trans still running good. Since your not towing I would find a good pickup and take with what ever tranny it comes with.

if you aren't familiar w/ the diesel I would drive a few different ones to compare. I was happy w/ all my diesels especially my 99. If you want more power down the road sometime, there is extreme hp hiding under the hood.

One more thing after reading your orig question. 95% of the time I'm by myself when driving so I went w/ a supercab and I need an 8' bed. Personnally I wouldn't go smaller I find having that extra room in the backseat comes in handy all the time.I had a 4 dr 4x4 dually for towing but it was too big for the magority of time. Some friends of mine went w/ the 4 dr & 6' bed. Think about how you going to use your truck most of the time & 4x4 is always nice. Reg cab gets real small.
