2.9 Quality Rebuilder
My 2.9 is doing that cycling lifter noise on anything but very short trips. If I slow down too fast from highway speeds the engine oil light will come on. It doesn't stay on. I'm running 10W40.
I've been reading about improved rockers and ways to improve oiling. Not looking for any great increases in HP just a very high quality rebuilt 2.9 that runs off the stock puter. A few extra ponies would not be unwelcome unlees they cost me MPG. If the few extra HP come with improved MPG and reliability then thats what I'm looking for.
Need this truck to do 700-1000 mile highway runs to Utah and Colorado. Then crawl off road. It has a 5.5" Skyjacker Class II lift, 35 front axle with 44 outers, 9" full width rear axle, 4.11 gears, C-4 auto tranny with a second low range (doubler box), and will run 33" tall tires. Highway speeds will run just under 3000 rpm.
Normal for these motors is the valve train noise just has poor oiling design
I have heard you can get performance 2.8 lifters and rocker setups that will eliminate the tap problem.
Lifters especially due to oem poor oiling design.
Camcraftcams is now selling the rocker spacer kits too for only $49 bucks!!! this alone frees up some nice ponies! In case nobody noticed that.... $49 bucks!!! and its a much better setup than stock! I have spent more on sushi and it did nothing for my truck

Also they have new roller rocker kits for a few $$ but greatly improve the oiling of the valvetrain parts and of course better power and durability.
I would go that route since, getting a rebuild due to valve train noise or slight power loss seems kinda pointless, since the motors are not that powerful to begin with.. not to mention about the only thing a builder would do is some head work, mabey bore to larger piston etc.. but the valve train components would still require aftermarket to get any decent gains..
I have heard the same info.
The oil preasure thing has me thinking that cam bearing are needed. So a rebuild will be in order.
Now if I can just find a engine rebuilder that does a lot of good high quality 2.9 motors with the upgrades I have read about I would be set.
Again, I am not looking for huge HP gains. I am looking for a reliable engine that I can take on long trips and not worry about being able to make it home.
