I got my oil changed at 'Mr. Lube' today. Mr Lube is a Canadian drive-in 'fluid maintenance' service.
The guy in the pit was explaining to me that I should have the oil in my rear differential changed to a heavy guage oil at around 5,000 kms (3100 miles). After that its good for 150,000 kms. My 2006 W14 4x4 has 20,000 kms (12,400 miles).
Truck is going to a Dealer for some work on Monday. I searched through this forum (not the 'net yet) and haven't found anything. What do you guys recommend?
That guy is just trying to sell you service and oil that you don't need. The diff lube that Ford uses is a high quality synthetic already and it may be better than what he was going to sell you. If you have the traction lok rear differential, you have to add friction modifier to the lube when you change it to allow the clutches to slip properly. You don't need to change it before the interval specified in the owner's manual unless the rear axle is completely submerged in water and the oil may have gotten contaminted by water. Tell the guy at goofy lube to stick to changing motor oil.
The rear diff already has 75w140 gear lube i can't think of anything thicker. The rear diff is filled for life unless it gets water in it then you need to change it.
Actually the earlier diff had 75-90W, the tsb for the rear whine states to upgrade to 75w-140 synthetic along with the repair.. The 2006 should already have the higher vis oil.
