Gas gauge issues

Started my 2000 XLT up this morning in 28 degree weather. Gas gauge only went all the way to full when I know I only had half tank of gas. Let truck run about 5 minutes. Shut it down for about 30 minutes. When I started it back up gas gauge worked normal. Any ideas as to what this could be? A couple of years ago when the battery went bad all of the gauges went crazy. Thanks.

everytime you start the truck, it goes all the way to full and then should've dropped to the actual amount of fuel.
no idea why it didn't...

Every since I first bought the truck new 6 years ago, when I first start it up it has always registered exactly how much gas was in the tank. Today it went all the way to full. Stayed there until I shut it down and re-started then went to half a tank. Weird. A few days ago I think I noticed it register almost 3/4 tank when I actually had less than half. Not real sure what's going on.

no offense, but you sure?
check the owner's manual though...my 2001 F150 says it's supposed to go all the way to full, then drop...all the gauges do.

Yes, I'm pretty sure. Every since that one incident, it has worked "normal", meaning that when I start it up it just registers what is actually in the tank. Only went to full and then came back down that one time.

Ya man. last week i filled my truck up with gas. It was at a half tank and i filled and watched the gauge when i started the truck. Went to full...everything is okay...nope... get about 2 blocks from the station and look down and the low fuel light is on and the guage is past E... I drove it for like 10 min to see if it would come back and it never did. So i went home and parked it and got on FTE to look it up... By the time i went back out an hour later it worked perfictly. Havent had any trouble since. I think the temp outside Was in the Teens...
