yesterday here in ohio we got quite a bit of snow. well this is the first 4x4 i have owned and i have a few questions. it is a f250 hd, manual hubs, dana44hd front, b-w 1356 tc, full float axle 39 out back.
tonight when i got home from work i had to put her into 4wd to get into my parking spot. well i kept trying to get it out off the street a little more, and i think it kicked itself out of 4wd. i was moving it and it just stopped moving and i tried to go forward and nothing, tried to go backward and nothing. tried to put it in park and i could hear the gears grinding somewhere downbelow. that is when i looked and saw the 4wd dummy light was not on. is it normal to kick themselves out of 4wd?
the truck also seems like sometimes when i put it into gear (r n d 2 1) it takes a couple of trys to get it into the gear i want it into. could this be the linkage needs adjusted?
thanks
sorry i am so longwinded but i just want to give the info that i have to better help with answers
It's in the transfer case. I had to rebuild mine this past fall. The fork wore out & wouldn't shift the transfer back into high. relatively easy to fix if your mechancially savvy? Is it a 1356 t/c? I'll try & find a link & post back with a pic.
i was also getting some serious wheel hop out of the rear end when i did it could this have helped kick it out. yesterday i had to make my own tracks down the street where i live. and the snow was up so the pumpkins were dragging and i was getting some wicked wheel hop out of the back. this is also my first truck over a half ton and is all the wheel hop to be expected with the stiff springs.
That I'm not familar with? Hopefully someone else will chime in & maybe have some ideas? I have a "91 F-150 XLT Lariat with the E4od & 1356 t/c & I don't have any problems with wheel hop? Will the truck move when you unlock the frnt hubs?
My f150 has the same t-case and it will pop into neutral sometimes. There doesn't seem to be much of a detent.I also know mine never wheel hopped and when I put a locker in it, it wheel hopped so bad one day it jumped into a ditch.
I just went back & reread your original post. You might want to check all the motor & trans mounts? It sounds like the transmission is being put in a bind. As far as the grinding sound, that's the transmission still in gear because the transfer slipped into neutral.
thanks everyone. i still don't know a whole lot about this truck i have only owned it for a month and a half, and this whole having the 4wd is completely new to me and most of my family. bear1_301 when you asked if the truck will move with the hubs unlocked. did you in 4wd or in 2wd. in 2wd it drives great and actually in 4wd it drives pretty good, it is just a completely different beast to me.
Well from your posts, it seems the transfer is working right? I mentioned the motor mounts because if they are worn or broke, the engine & transmisson could be in a bind & when you put try to put it in gear, everything is binding & out of alignment? The previous owner may never have used the transfer & the linkage could possibly be gummed or corroded with rust & not letting it go completely into gear? I would definately check the linkage at all the shifting points. I know when my shift fork screwed up, I drove to town one day & parked it for a few minutes, when I came back out & started it & put it in gear, it wouldn't move? I tried reverse & all forward gears, it wouldn't move. Finally I thought what the hell, I pulled the transfer into 4x4 high & it locked in but when I started down the road, it wasn't shifting right & the rpms were rapping outta site before it would shift. Turned out the fork had wore down the ears on one side of the fork allowing it to shift into neutral & when I put it into what I thought was 4 high, it was in 4 low. The fork wouldn't allow me to slide the shifthub back into 2 high. It was permanatly locked in 4 low & it would do some front wheel hop then. Course I have the automatic hubs.
the last owners did not drive it very much at all and it has alot of rust, so i would think that you said everything could be rusted or gummed up and just need some atten.
Be aware there are several different BW 1356 4X4 systems. Ford made changes in 1987. Whatever you do to fix the T/C, to get the correct parts, you will need the transfer case TAG number. It's on the side of the case and will include the basic Ford parts number of: 7A195.
tonight i was out at the truck looking at it and i went underneath and was looking at the mounts. i looked at the linkage and i grabbed it and tried to move it to see if it was loose. when i did this it moved and i can't remember if it moved forward or back but the truck shifted like i took it out of gear. so i got out from underneath and got in and it started up fine. which told me it didn't go out of park. and it went into everygear just fine. and drove just fine.
okay i am going to sound like an idiot now but it was the linkage that looked like it had an electric sensor type thing on it with some wires coming out. it was on the drivers side close to the transmission pan. it is a c6.
any ideas would be great.
