We're going back together with a slightly modified 272 and the harmonic balancer came apart today. Can't find one in any of the catalogs ..... any ideas?
Original 1956 272 V8 Damper: B5AZ-6312-A .. Single sheeve pulley includes damper = 6.575"/6.625" diameter pulley / 6 timing marks / 4.86" overall length.
1957/64 Damper...some were fitted to earlier engines, or current engine might be a replacement: C3TZ-6312-E .. single sheeve pulley includes damper. 6 3/8" O.D. / 6 1/4" damper / 4 1/2" long / two 3/8" -16 holes / 15 timing marks.

Try Bill's numbers at a Ford dealer. Ya never know what they can come up with.
See my post #4. Then count how many timing marks your old damper has. You can't sub one for another, to my knowledge.
That reminds me. Since you are dealing with the balancer and a new motor, you ought to check the TDC indicator of whatever balancer you end up using and make sure it is true TDC of your #1 piston.
I will be doing this in the near future with my motor. If memory serves it requires the head to be off, and the use of a dial indicator. You carefully make a temporary mark on the balancer at .020 before TDC, and another at .020 after TDC, and the true TDC on the balancer is centered between the two temporary marks. At the center point file a small mark at that point using a good triangle file. Do some looking, because I may be off on the .020. It could be .010. Either would work, but with .010 the two temp marks would be closer together, leaving less room for error on the center scribe.
It was my understanding that the balancers were interchangeable. I have one for a car due to arrive Monday.
Edit: This site http://m571.com/yblock/index.htm was put together by a fellow FTEer, and describes how to use a cloth tape measure around the balancer, and make additional timing marks at 10, 20, 30 degrees or whatever. Look under Distributor timing.
Not much time required and you will appreciate it when timing the distributor.
