No Start!

It is not very cold here, but i was letting my truck idle in the driveway when it stopped running. I assumed it was out of fule because it is on a downward inlcine, and was low on fuel. I have 8 gallons in it and still no start. I check the fuel bowl and it looks empty. Is this like the old Diesel merceds where if you run them dry you have to prime them somehow?

I need to get this truck started and out of my driveway! Please help!

Turn the key on and wait 20 seconds, turn off. Do this several times to pump fuel back into system. After several cycles of this, then try to start. Takes several times to get the air out of the system.

Don't try to start until after several cycles. You'll just pull down you batteries.

Nothing..........still wont start. although there is fuel in the bowl now. I tried that about 5 or 6 times just let that pump run, and when its finished I cycle the key again. Any other ideas?

How much drain have you put on batteries? If they are weak, it won't start good. You still have to get the air out of the fuel rails. Try a few more cycles.

I have a Battery charger on it, charging it at 6 amps. I have it on there just in case it does start to get low. It just let it sit on there while I am ion the house. Ok Ill give it another shot.

Still no start. I am starting to wonder if maybe it wasnt low on gas at all. Maybe something else caused it to shutdown while idling? I am now charging it at 75 amps to keep the batteries up. I can hear the fuel pump that is under the truck running. I wond if I should hook a fuel pressure gauge up to the truck and make sure it is building pressure

If the fuel bowl was empty, then it was low on fuel, at least at that point. When one runs out of fuel, it can be tough to get it restarted. I helped a guy a couple of months ago that had run out of fuel. We had to cycle the fuel pump several times and hook 2 trucks up to overcome his very weak batteries to get him started. It still took several times at cranking attempts to get it started. I guess purging the air was the problem. I got to go to work now. I will be back in the morning and see what you found. If you can leave the charger on overnight it might help. 6 amps isn't going to do much to the 2 big batteries you have. Don't crank more that a few seconds at a time.

Sir-

Batteries are up now (they were never really down) after being on a 20 amp charger all night. I am gonna get another 5 gallons of fuel and see if that helps to fully submerse the pickup tube becuase the truck is still at an incline.

I hope that does it for you. Remember to only crank for a few seconds at a time. I wouldn't crank for more that 5-6 seconds at a time. And Please stop calling me Sir. I feel old enough without that.

nothing, I checked all of my fuses they are all good. The truck sounds ok when it cranks. I am feeling like maybe something else is wrong here. The truck now has 15 gallons of fuel in it, Batteries are up, it is 35 degrees outside I wonder if I should empty the fuel bowl again, and see if I can get it to fill on its own, and if not I know I have a pump problem.

Did it suddenly shut off or taper down when it stalled? Taper down is running out of fuel. Anything else is something failed electrically.

Dan-

It sounded as if it taperd down. Like it kinda went clunk clunk clunk clunk then died. Like it ran poorly for about 3-4 seconds then quit. I have now put 20 gallons of fuel in it, just becuase I was concerned about it sitting on an inlcine, and didnt know if the pick up tube was fully submersed. I have cycled the key and let the pump run so many times I have lost count. I think it should have started by now.

I also checked the codes yesterday and there were no codes present. So that should rule out a cam postion sensor right?

PROGRESS!

Ok guys, I removed the fuel filter from the bowl, and drained the bowl down to the top of what looks like some sort of rivet. I left the fuel filter out, and cycled the ket several times. The bowl is not filling on its own. I can hear the fuel pump running! is there a lifter pump inside the tank that is no good? I have seen a mod on this board about adding another pump but I thought these trucks had two already.
