I've got an 04' F150 with the Triton, I bought it used with a slight knock which I was told was the cam sensor. Said they had problems with them on the 04' and 05' models, and that it didn't hurt anything and wasen't covered under warranty . I read the TSB on it and it was exactly as described. But it is steadily getting louder, my truck "stumbles" at idle if left running for awhile, gas mileage has dropped, and it just doesn't have the pep it used to. I am using the water thin 5W-20 oil that Ford recommends and it doesn't seem to matter if I run full synthetic, partial, or regular oil, it stays the same. My question is, has anyone had this knock and gotten the sensor replaced, and did it work? Also does anyone run thicker oil, or stabilizers like Lucas to help with the knocks? Any input would be greatly appreciated!
Well loudpedal i also have a f150 5.4 2004 and i have a tapping noise, mech.'s i work with said it sounds like a collapsed hydraulic lifter but i don't have the money right now to get it fixed, I never heard about cam sensor. well maybe we can get some input on these problems. Mine started about 6 months ago but no money since katrina took everything we had.

Reason: not pinging, just a tapping
Hey guys i have a 2004 FX4 with the 5.4L 3V it is the CAM Phasers that are the problem. My truck sounded very loud and took it to 2 dealers and they said that it was normal. (B.S.) I felt, so while i was in Michigan where my wife is from i took it down to the local dealership Roy O'brien Ford. I told them what i heard and what some have sad it was. That night i got a call , Mr.Bingham your truck is FIX! They changed all the Cam Phasers, theirs 2(two) on either side of the engine total of 4 of course. It was to no charge to me and the vehicle is still under manufacture warranty. Its the phasers guys, just got to get the dealer to take care of it. I know theirs TSBs about this on here but it's all about getting the dealer to take care of you.....GOOD LUCK

I had my cam phase sensors replaced @ 11k miles. The truck has 37k miles on it now, and it is still quiet. If you are in still under 36k miles, this IS covered under warranty. Go to another dealer and give them the TSB. The cam phase sensors were slightly redesigned from what I was told, and the newer version came out in May or June of 2005. If you are out of the warranty period, this can be an expensive fix (about $1,200 from what has been posted on here). As for the oil stabilizers and the like, I don't think they will help quiet this problem and these engines were not designed to run on thick oil.
Good luck with the resolution, an keep us updated.
My old truck was a 97 F150 with a 4.2L V6 tons of power, and it started to get a knocking in the engine, i found out i had a piston misfire and a blown gasket, i replaced that and it started again when the truck would warm up. This time it was a bearing on the crankshaft to i just said screw it and got a 2007 F150 with a 5.4L V8
