Starter that would be nice

Hi guys,

I noticed when it really started getting cold here that my starter started sounding like the bendix was not engaging or was engaging slowly causing some grinding and starting problems. First time in 6 years that this has happened. Not sure if there is some lube that is sticking or a tolerence problem. Anyway, anyone had this happen? How bad is removing and replacing the starter. Mine is a 2001 F250 4X4 crew.

Thanks in advance.
Pat

From: Rio Rico, AZ.
One of the easiest jobs to do. Disconnect the batteries, roll under, disconnect the wires, three bolts and it's out. Lot's of clearance.

Thanks Qwik!

Any idea on what could be causing it to act like that? Someone mentioned an oil leak that could be causing it to gum up.

I had this happen about two weeks ago when the temps were -15. From what i gathered it is just the starter is getting weak and since it takes alot more to start these big engines when it's cold it shows the signs of the weak starter. i have been waiting till it got a little warmer out to change mine, it is working fine now that it's above 0 again.

I had the same happen to my F250. Replaced the solenoid on my starter about a month ago because the large bolt broke from the housing. Temps been in the teens for the last few weeks. I still have the grinding noise. Guess it's just cold!!!

Replaced the starter and now she sings to life.

Only bad thing was it was a Chinese reman from Autozone. Only folks that had one in stock. Limited Lifetime warranty though.
