Hi all, i want to switch my pipes to come out in front of the rear tires, instead of behind them (what i have now)... I want to go straight pipes, and i was wondering if the backpressure would be good enough not to toast my motor. Its a 351M. I dropped the open headers because of backpressure also, got a PM about it and it turned out it would hurt ME! I want to go straight pipe all the way to 22 inch crome tips, what would this sound like, would it hurt my head. Its a longbed F-150. How big (diameter) could i go with this pipe. im not looking for hp gain, just want to keep it the same, maybe better w/ straight pipes, but i dont want to add a muffler for extra hp.. Any advice would be greatly appreciated and welcomed. I'm new and am using this forum to my full extinct!
You should not have any problem with backpressure. I wouldnt use a pipe any larger then 2 1/2 since it is not needed. Going straight pipe is going to be loud, but with such big tips it may mellow it out a little.

are the 22 inches the size i should use, what diameter should i get for the tips, will it be obnoxious or just loud?? How much do you think the local exaust shop would cost me, does anybody have these pipe/tips on there truck, if so, do you like the loudness.
First thing is a most shops will not do your exhasut if you do not have cats. They wont take them off either. Even my 79' was rejected at a shop because it was suppose to have cats on it. Unless you know some one who works at a shop and can do it. MY truck is piped running through Thrush glasspacks, it sounds bad ***. Costed me about $250.My friend back in highschool had a straight piped chevy with a 350 and The tips were Hedman Headers Big-Wazoos (24in). IT gave the truck a mellow rumble at idle then just screamed when on the gas. It was loud almost went deaf when he reved it in the shop. For tip size i would go 3in. Thats about standard for most.
I've got a 95 f-150 with a 302 in it with straight 2 1/2 pipe from each header flange back and exiting out at 45 degrees. No cats no muffleres just pipe and tips. Honestly it is probably the best sounding truck in my town. Beats the chevy's with the glasspacks any day. I have ran just about any set-up u can run and this is by far the best. Doesn't effect oxygen sensor readings at all, just make sure your 02,s are welded into one of the pipes. bending the pipes at a 45 sure seemed to make it louder as well. it sounds like a muscle car and when it raps out before it shifts you will feel like you are rattling paint off cars as they pass. This is just with a 302 remember my friends got a 351 with the same set-up it has a deeoer but evenly loud tone. good luck.
That setup with no mufflers will sound terrible and give you a headache after about 5 miles.
If you want loud, install a couple of "Race" mufflers, right before the pipe bend to the side. You need something to take the edge off the open exhaust, and make the tone more pleasing to the ear.
Summit offers several types, from the FM single chamber, to the Borla (expensive), and the Moroso Spiral Flow. I have a Moroso SF on my 351M in series with a MAC single chamber, and it's still too loud. One of these should be about right for you.
i will send you a sound clip if you dont believe how quality the sound is. it is not too loud, especially with the windows rolled up it just has a deep rumble. IT SOUNDS AWESOME AND IM NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO THINKS SO. you could ask people at the drag how it sounds and they would agree with me. it is both cost effective as well as performance enhancing. keep your pipe size to 2 1/2 cause u need atleast a bit of backpressure. if you wanna turn heads and make people wonder if you got a modified engine under that hood this is the way to go. what year is your truck though?

Actually, the less backpressure the better. Backpressure is caused by a restricton of some type, and robs the engine of power. You cannot get rid of all of it, but it can be reduced considerably. jd
