aaaarrrrggh...... shoulda shoulda shoulda

Stuck on I-95 in Miami at 9:30 this morning, and the truck just dies, real hard like. No brakes, ps, nothing, and it's all your faults... Its easy to change the cps, 10 minutes I changed the cps ,all you need is a 10mm to change the cps... Shoulda changed the cps. I think it's the cps. I hope it's only the cps.

First thought after I got it stopped was sheer panic. Popped the hood and first sight is a slightly torn up drive belt, still on, but slightly torn along the forward edge. Nothing leaking ( really badly that is ) and started mentally going through things. New alternators still in place. Tensioner still in place. Battery cables etc.... So I try to crank it again and it only cranks, won't start. Slight relief. Call Tow truck. $65.00. On the way. Start thinking what it is, and I can see the damn pages in my mind. Changed the cps today while I replaced the water pump, 10 minutes to do the cps etc.... shoulda shoulda shoulda. Start trying to remember symptoms. Suddenly dies, sometimes will restart and be fine for a while. Tow trucks here. Can I steer it a little he asks so we are not out in traffic loading it up. No I say, it won't turnover, but I'll steer it manually. Did I mention I have 42"s on it? Two feeble attempts at steering and I try to crank it over again. Starts, I steer, we go. Same thing offloading. Have a great picture of my truck attempting to eat the flatbed.
Back at the shop, I'm trying harder to remember the pages. It is the cps I try to assure myself. Best price I could get is for 149.00, and 40 for the belt. Happy valentines day darling. I'll be cooking tonight. What did I get you... why a beautiful cps my dear.... shoulda shoulda shoulda. I'll do it next time I change the oil. It's raining out. How much for the water pump and the cps. How Much? OK. I'll take the water pump. Will be back for the cps. Christmas. New years. When I do the fuel filter next. Do your self a favor. If this sounds like you, change the cps. This way when your goes out, I'll be the one consoling you as I'm sure all of you will do for me.....

This is the part where you all write in and tell me that , yes, it is the cps.... or isn't.

Living proof of why so many of us carry a spare CPS.
Happy Valentines day.

Well first of all, do what others have said on this site and throw a spare in the glovebox.

Second, it's probably best you did not have one on you. Maybee a guardian angel looking out for you in a funny/sarcastic way. I can't imagine taking a **** on the shoulder of I-95 in Miami let alone lying under the truck at 9:30 at the tail end of rush hour. You probably would have been mowed over and on the 6 O'Clock news as the most body parts strew across a 1/4 mile area.

You made it home safe, drink a beer and start over tomorrow

No shazit, that road is crazazy! I drove that sucker last September and couldn't believe it. If I drive it again and my ride stalls, I'll hang a right and head for the trees. At least out there you can't get *** ended by the freaks running 90 to 105.

No idea why the lines. Not the first post with em either, but no idea why.... As to I-95, I was doing my best salmon impression, heading away from rush hour, but still at this time it can get hairy trying to stop 800lbs with no ps or pbrakes..... A little concerned though that some of you carry a spare cps. That bad? I've got close to 180k miles on her, and as 150 of it from me, adn this is the first. At $150.oo, that's a little steep to have a spare for the actual use I got out of the oem one no?

From what I have read here, a CPS can last 100K, 150K or as low as 20K. You never know.

Check out ebay - I think they are on there for $50

Bossman, you can find the Cps cheaper if you shop around but mine went out 1 week after I bought it (used) with 102k on it. Everyone I spoke to at the time, before I found this site, said buy two. Well I didnt cause the stealership did the work. I am amoung the many that need to get a second one "just in case". My local diesel shop can get them for 109.00 and their not a cheap place to buy from.
