I have a 92 f150 5.8. The problem i'm having is hard starting. I have 42 psi at the fuel rail and I am getting spark at the cap. I pulled the plugs they are black a dry black if that makes any sense. If I put the pedal to the floor it still wont start. engine spins easy. Changed plugs thought they might have been fouled. Started engine ran but try to touch pedal and pings and pops bad and wants to die. check engine light comes on and runs rough, light goes out idles smooth truck runs fine, light comes on like a switch and the engine runs rough and poorly. push pedal to smooth out engine and dies, does not want to start. Check engine code is thermoactor. I did remove all of the smog pump hardware and pump, but I don't think that effects the way it runs. I have alot of info, I been fighting the problem for months, Ive put new plugs wires cap, tps, changed intake gaskets, new map sensor, new fuel pump.
Does your truck have the TFI module on the distributor? Its a grey box thats bolted onto the side of it. Otherwise check the fuel pressure regulator vacuum line and make sure theres no gas in it. It sounds like a timing issue which is what leads me to believe it might be your TFI module. I had one that when i hit the gas at about 2k it would start hesitating and running really funny. Then one day it just went out, i put a new one on and no problems since.
The distributor doesn't have the module on the side, just wires coming with a plug coming out of the distributor. I've checked the fuel regulator it was good, but I'll check it again to be for sure. Also does the ford trucks fuel pump just prime with key on, or does the fuel pump run continually. This truck with the key on, fuel pump runs and doesn't stop. just wondering, I've had GM vechiles and the fuel pump just primes for 2 seconds and stops intill vehicle starts.
This truck with the key on, fuel pump runs and doesn't stop.
yeah, its not supposed to do that....i dont remeber what that means, but hopefully someone else will chip in about that, but the fuel pump is supposed to stop after it primes the system. The only code that it pulled was the thermactor?
Worked on truck again and added fuel presseure regulator, no luck. It did fire up finally after cranking and cranking once it starting running the check engine light came on. i started playing with different stuff, the od switch would not signal that I was turning it off, pushing throttle rapidly to accelerate would cause pinging and back firing but only when check engine light on, if light was off it wouldn't ping or back fire with rapidly pushing accelerater. Also weird the fuel pump would prime than stop like it was suppose too But once light came on and tried to restart fuel pump would run and not stop with key on. Weird things going on? I wonder I must have some ignition problem, maybe why hard starting, black plugs. Just guessing could a computer (ECM) be the problem. Any help appreiciated. Thanks
sounds like a bad TFI module to me, but you said you dont have one of those, and I'm not sure about your year of where it'd be. Wierd that the only code it pulled was for the thermactor
What about a plugged cat? That would explain the no check engine light. We just had a car with a plugged cat in today and the thing barely ran. It would pop and sputter and barely drive. Do you have a timing light? Could you try hooking it up to each plug wire and seeing if the spark is erratic or not?
Another thing you could do is start the truck, and go under the hood and start wiggling wires to see if you have a loose connection somewhere.
Thinks for the input, I don't have a converter anymore the darnest thing. The tfi module is on the driver fender. I 'll check it out. I was doing more research online and found similar symptoms and the ECM was the problem. I'll let you know but, I really am thinking it is the computer.
