Installed 6637 today. Answer me this?

Installed the 6637 today. Man that thing is big! Took it out for a test run. I rolled down the window so I could hear the turbo. The turbo sounds great! never heard it before. Answer me this. After getting on it pretty good and being set back in my seat, I let off the gas and heard a Psssssss sound. Is this normal? I am new to diesel. Is this the wastegate? I hope this is normal. Hope you guys can help me out. I don't have a boost gauge yet but I could feel the boost. Truck is running great just don't want something to be wrong. Thx.

Yep, that's normal. Just excess air your engine don't need coming back out. Sounds great don't it.

The sound you are hearing has been there all along, you can hear it now cause the air box is not muffling it. Perfectly normal, enjoy!

I'll chime in with complete agreement, knowing that the more you hear it the better you'll feel about it. NORMAL, and at the same time... absolutely WONDERFUL!

If ya like that, just wait until you open up the exhaust, say with a 4" or 5" and no muffler.

Yeah, It was a little scary for me to. After I got started, all went well. Just wish i would have done before I lifted the front. Wouldn't have been quite as much of a reach. Plenty of good info on this site for the install.
Here's what I used and have been very happy.

One question you asked, I didn't see answered - this is not the wastegate. The sound is air escaping, but it's coming back out of the turbo inlet. The wastegate is on the exhaust side, and you won't hear it. What you may be thinking of is a blow off valve, the kind that a lot of turbo ricers run that makes the hissing sound when they shift. We don't have a blow off valve on our trucks.

Please correct me if I am wrong. But I understand you as saying that extra boost in the compressor is just vented back up the intake tube when you let off the throttle? isnt that hard on the compressor?

I was a little scared to drill in the manifold at first to but after reading for hours on this site and the dieselmanor gauge install write up i got down there and did it and it wasn't really bad. Just do your homework and make sure you have a good drill bit set and tap and you should be fine.

Yes, and yes. The extra boost is vented back through the intake and out backwards through the compressor wheel, which is not that hard on the compressor wheel itself, but it is very hard on the turbo shaft and the turbo seals.

So when you hear this sound are you doing harm to the shaft and seals? Thought this sound was normal for the turbo? I don't get on the gas very much but I do hear this sound sometimes during normal driving.
As for drilling the manifold, I am working up my courage to do this. My biggest fears is breaking off the drill bit and telling my wife I spend over 300.00 for gauges.

It is normal. Anytime you are making boost, say 15lbs or more and your engine changes rpms, the extra air has got to go some where. While it may not be good on the turbo shaft and seals, it can't be that harmful, that is the only way for the extra air to go. The only differance now than before is you can hear it now.
Don't worry about the drill. Get a good angle on the drill, cover you eyes with goggles and go for it.
