4 wheel drive - sometimes?

Hello all,

Last fall Ford replaced one hub because it was clicking. This winter my 4 wheel drive seems to work sometimes. I have done the WD-40 trick to free the old hub in the past. It is now frozen solid and I'm afraid to turn too hard as it might break.

I locked the new hub in place, the old one is frozen in auto.

Is this ok?
How can I test the old hub to see if it is working?

Spray the hub down with some time of Break Away and gently try a pair of pliers. As long as your system is functioning then Auto will lock in for you.

Put your truck in 4WD. Drive a 100 feet or so. Stop. Reach behind the wheel with the old hub and see if you can spin the axle shaft. If it spins, hub doesn't work. If it is locked then you're okay.

I wouldn't drive around with one hub locked and one not. They should either both be free or both locked.

Keep in mind that you'll get binding on sharp turns due to the U-joint connection at the wheel when one of both are locked.
