I have decided to sell my 92 F150. My plan is to down size to a Ranger. All my major construction is down on the house but, would still like to have a truck for weekend beer runs. haHa. What i would like to know is. What was the first year the Ranger had fuel inj. Also was there any major problems with the earlier years.
1986 was the first EFI. My 1988 was relatively trouble-free, but anything that old now that has not been abused, modified, or just plain used up would be rare. The automatic transmissions were not that strong, but again, on an old one, it woud not have the original anyway. We had a 1989 and a 1991, both automatics, had the trannies die at about 110k.
Thanks Jim, If I can find something with a halfway decent body and interior. That would work. Why does the Mazda p/u look so much alike? Are they one and the same?
I had a 84 Mazda 4x4 5 spd. Great truck until the frame said see ya! Sorry for all the questions but, I know nothing about a ford Ranger. I do like the way they look tho.
The only reason I did not post in the ranger forum, is I am looking for unbiased opinions. One other question. Are they true 4x4s?
I had an '85 Ranger 2.3L 4-cyl. and I am quite sure it had FI. That was almost 15 years ago, but I sure don't remember a carb. Maybe TB-TFI? Did Ford ever have that, or was in just a GM thing?
If you want to keep a truck for weekend use and your current truck is OK, why downsize. You won't be running it enough for gas to make a difference and you will miss your 150 quickly once you drive a Ranger for a little while.
You'll feel like you got off a motorcycle and got on a moped.
86 was the first year for efi on the v6, not sure about the 4 cylinder. My 84 2.3 had a carb. I've had a lot of 150's and rangers over the years, I perfer the size of the ranger myself, but some folks like the feel of a bigger truck. I love the look of the 1st generation rangers, but as stated, it's would be hard to find one that isn't wore out and if you do, I'm sure it will cost an arm and a leg. However, they are pretty easy to work on.

It will be my daily driver. I just stepped out of the 150 and climbed into a 93 Hyundai excel. So it will be a step up. Thanks for the thought tho. I have owned two Mazda p/u and loved them both. My thought is. There has to be someone that can use a a really good running and looking F150. The truck served me well when I counted on it. Now it is time to pass it on to someone else that really could use it.
To make a long story short: 2.5 years aso I had a 2004 F250 4x4 PSD SCAB (awesome!). Sold it to financially scale down and bought a 2004 F150 4x4. Two weeks ago I bought my first Ranger (2004 SCAB 3.0 Edge w/ 31K miles) and I just sold my F150 last night.
My reasons: Although I could afford the F150 FX4, and I WANT it, I didn't NEED it. I paid cash for the Ranger and have money in the bank from the F150 sale so now I'll be able to put that "car payent" in the bank rather than pay for what I refer to as a "shiny object" - material posessions that we think we NEED to be cool or better than the next guy.
The Ranger will get me from A to B, last a long time, and I'll still be able to haul some stuff back from Home Despot or Lowe's.
Not to mention the market on oil is very volatile right now, and regardless of the price per gallon, I will be driving my Ranger with a 4 banger! It could go to $6.00 per gallon and I'll be driving while others will have to park.
I learned on another post that while the fuel injection (EEC-IV) was introduced in 1984 on the 2.8L, the 2.3L had carbs. Last year I sold my fuel injected 90 2wd Ranger 5-speed manual, 2.9L to a buddy, and it's still going with about 200k miles on it. The 2.9 was never a powerhouse (for me anyway) but it was reliable. I never got better than 20 mpg except with a camper shell, then I got about 22.

Bingo.
Another reason I made the choice to downsize - I think things are goona get rough at the gas pumps in about, oh, 2 years or so.

CMOS
Thats all I am looking for also. One of the few good things about living on Long Island is. Alot of trucks never really get a workout or are beaten to death.
Case in point. The 92 F150 I6 2x4 custom I bought 4 yrs ago. Is in excellent condition, With the exception of a little cancer on upper rear wheel wells. The only thing I had to replace was p/s pump and starter. I think I have a buyer already, Without even advertising. So this weekend begins the search.
Wish me luck.
I guess the other poster was wrong...sorry for passing along bad info. All I know for sure is what was in my 90 and my current vehicles, and even then I'm still learning stuff!
