I got a good camera phone pic of a SD F-550 tow truck towing a 6500 GMC flatbed tow truck. I'm sure power was not a problem with the 7.3L in the 550, but stopping with a lot of weight lifted off the front axle???
Actually, my brother used to do stuff like that with his '74 highboy (the one in my sig).
One of his many stories was about a rig that slid sideways into a snow bank. It was there for like 2 days because the driver couldn't get anyone big enough to come help him.
Along comes my brother with the '74, the roads were pretty clear. Put it in 4low, chained up and tried to pull him out... with the truck bouncing on all four wheels, he drops the intermediate driveshaft (divorced transfer case). Broke a u-joint. Crazy man that he is, he was carrying tools and spare u-joints. So, 1/2 hour later, got everything back together and pulled the semi out.

Actually, the reason I bought a Superduty was because for the first time in a LONG TIME, the standard solid-axle front w/leaf springs was BACK in an F250 in '99. So I could comfortably replace the highboy with something that was just as capable, if not more so.
So far, I have done almost the same things with the Superduty as the '74 highboy.
The "hopping on all four wheels in 4LOW" was done already in my SD It was pulling stumps though, not semi's...
I just pulled a semi out of the loading dock at my work. One of my co-workers video taped it with his cell. I'll try and load it here...not sure how to do it... give me a while to figure it out. If anybody wants to post it for me I'll email it to you.
I got to not only help jump start the casting crowns semi at the life light fest, but also had to give him a little pull to help me out from behind the very muddy stage area!.....goes to show a SD can do just about anything!
Hmmm... let me see what all I can remember pulling with 6.0L Ford F-350 SRW
10 Humvees (one at a time of course, a few of them fully up armored)
1 Case 6k front end loader with parking brake applied
1 Ford 5 ton dumptruck with frozen brakes
1 Hyster 10k Forklift high centered in a ditch
1 Chevy Silverado
Regularly pull 75,000 pds with my 97 F350 with 460. Put it in 4lo granny gear and just let it idle away. That weight is 35ft wide and 80ft long aka a Hovercraft. But the 97 does not pull like my 68 F250 with a 390 does. None of these new truck equal the old highboys though. My friend hauls fuel 3,000 gals at a time in a F600 and had to pull it out fully loaded with a 76 F250 with 500 gal of fuel in it. The front tires came fully off the ground about 6ft. It was chained all the way around.
And I had fun today in 2-3 inches of ice and snow. Fed ex truck was stuck. I broke two tow straps, then lined bumpers up and pushed him out since I didn't have a better strap (only 3500K test straps). Truck didn't even notice it.
I can't imagine. I pulled a stuck Dodge cummins last week and had to pull his front end at a 90 degree angle to get him out. Had the hardest time getting traction on the ice, even in 4low. Makes me want to splurge on a locker or positrack.
