Noise while in 4x4 Hi
Today I was driving the truck on snow-covered roads, with the manual hubs locked. I only engaged the 4x4 mode when I was on snowy stuff, never more than 1/4 mile at a time.
At one point I got a bzzzZZZZZ sound from under the center of the truck, which I assume would be the transfer case. It got louder and louder until I cut the 4x4 mode after a couple seconds. I was driving down a level, fairly straight snowpacked road with just light throttle. It stopped as soon as I turned off 4x4 mode. I used 4x4 Hi only a little bit after that.
My fiance had been driving the truck in snow earlier today and she said it did the same thing to her once. It didn't do anything like this last winter.
What's going on? I guess I'll be draining the t/c when the weather warms up, but should I completely stop using 4x4 Hi?

It could be the front driveshaft that needs the u-joints replaced or that you had so much snow packed in the wheels they were out of balance (very common). I would still hold off on working on it until you checked those out when things thaw out and the road is dry dirt.

Is there some kind of actuator/solenoid that engages it? It doesn't make sense to me why it would be engaged for over a mile then start grinding. Unless you're suggesting it wasn't engaged at all up to that point.
