I went and looked at a 2000 F-250 7.3 w/ 57xxx miles. At first look it was a nice truck. Then driving it I noticed the truck was wandering all over the road. It has new tires all around, and before i buy it and sink myself into a problem i can't fix i was wondering what are the possible problems w/ this truck wandering?
you can adjust the mesh on the gear box. On top of it you'll see a nut, and the bolt it's on has an allen head. Loosen the nut, then tighten the allen bolt, then snug the nut back down. Don't over tighten the allen. Just a 1/4 turn at a time .. drive it and see... then adjust to your liking ...
It could be the steering box to the sway bars bushings. Is it a dealership sale or private owner?
Check the whole front suspension, see if you cant find anything thats loose. If you can jack the front end up and grab a tire and push on the top and pull on the bottom and vis-versa. 57k miles is noting for that truck(unless its been beat to pi$$) but i had to replace my balljoints at 70k(bought at 65k).
Steering Box...but don't think it would be worn at only 57K miles.
Draglink ends - if they are greasable type, could have 'dry' joints that are worn out.
Tie rod ends - same as draglink.
Knuckle ball joints - if greasable, could be worn.
Wheel bearings - adjustment too loose
Are the tires worn in strange pattern - out of alignment, and possibly the tow-in is not to specs.
Check the measurement from tire to tire, rim to rim on each side of the truck to see if the rear axle might be tweaked slightly causing rear axle 'steer'.
You need to jack up the front end and put it on jack stands...the have someone wobble the tires back and forth, up and down to see if there is movement at the ball joints.
Wobble the tires back and forth against the tie rods, draglink to see if there is movement in the ends, etc.
A good inspection is required to find the problem. Good luck!

I am (and I shouldn't) assuming that this is a dealership you went to, and if it is you should bring up this issue with them and have them try and correct it before you buy. These SD's do have a little "wander" to them but it shouldn't be significant. You should not be constantly correcting the steering wheel. More than likely the steering needs to be tightened up, an alignment can also help and like the others mentioned, the balljoints as well. If this is a private person, maybe you can get them to drop the price down to offset the cost of having those items repaired/replaced.
What is the exact brand of tire? If it's Firestone Steeltex, that's why it wonders. Local Ford garage was dumbfounded when one complained of wandering. Other guy didn't want the BFG's he had. They switched rims and all being identical. Solved the wandering issue.
