You don't need one, but my 93 at stock settings will push out 1000 pulling up hill, so if you want to be safe, better put one in if you turn up the fuel so you don't exceed 1250, (melting temp of aluminum pistons).

If you have not improved your intake and exhaust why do you want to turn up the pump? But the answer to your question is yes, a pyro is needed to monitor your exhaust temp's. also the placement is important to what the max temp you run.

With a stock intake and exhaust system, all you will probably get is more black smoke and lower fuel mileage.

You need to open up the exhaust and intake to get more air into the engine to make more power with the extra fuel.

....and THEN, yes, you will need a pyrometer - unless you want to risk slagging your engine. With stock exhaust and intake, turning up the pump will just result in black soot from unburned fuel - like Dave said. I doubt that it will even raise your EGTs much.

BUT, if you get more air in via a modified intake (so that you can actually BURN that extra fuel you get from turning up the pump), and if you give that burned fuel somewhere to go (via a better exhaust), then things WILL heat up. With the heat of the extra burned fuel you'd better be able to keep an eye on those EGTs or you just might melt your pistons......

With nothing more than a custom Y-pipe to 3" exhaust with a free flowing muffler, DUAL ram-air intakes, and the IP turned up just 1 flat, my EGTs will get above 1200 in about 15 seconds when I'm hauling a 6k-7k load uphill and start putting my foot in it....
