I have a 90, with a 302, auto trans 4x4. We had the truck running. It would idle fine until you touch the fuel. Then it would stall. It would fire right back up again. So we changed the wires, cap, rotor, and plugs. It still would not idle properly and would stall when putting the truck in gear. Now it will not start at all. The fuel pump cycles when turning on the key. There is spark. We changed the fuel filter and it was nearly plugged. Still will not fire. Won't even fire on quick start. Any help would be appriecated.
i had the same exact problem. try changing the pressure fuel regulator and the tempeture coolant sensor. the tempeture coolant sensor runs half your maf (map) sensor. we changed them and haven't had a problem yet. hope it helps.
if you have a napa auto parts store here are the numbers you'll need
temperture coolant sensor part # ts4005sb cost us $13.99
fuel regulator part # 3-1704a $36.99
some parts stores might be cheaper though so check around.
if you have anymore problems just let us know

I have changed the fuel pressure regulator and the truck still will not start. I didn't changed the coolant temp. sensor. The charcoal canister on the fender is completely rotten. Should I plug these vacuum lines? This has got me stumped. It started and ran well before. Then it just started to act up, stall and now nothing. Every so many rotations it sounds like it gets some life but I think that it is probably just compression firing. Not actually from the spark. Any other ideas would be helpful. I know that open vacuum lines will make an engine run rough but I would think it should still fire. Unless it is a line going to the map sensor but does it not go into the top of the plenum with the main lines? I have a Chilton manuel which is not any help at all. Pretty well at the point of just giving up on her.
Insure that you have not spun a timing chain. Pull the dist cap and crank to be sure rotor is turning. If it is check to see if #1 still lines up. I spent too many hours trying to cure my 302 (no code for a stripped chain or gear) When the whole time it was the timing chain and gear set. Had the same symptoms you describe.
How long has the truck been down? Our truck was down for 2 years, so we changed the plugs, fuel regulator, temp sensor, and cleaned all the vacuum hoses. We changed the gas tank cause it was leaking, the pump was still good so no need to change. See i changed the fuel one frist and still nothing then the temp coolant sensor now she runs. the temp coolant sensor runs half the map sensor so if the map sensors not working it might be the temp coolent sensor try that and see if it works. it could also be what the other guy was saying about he timing put a timing light on it and see also.
hpe that helps if not write back i'll see what else i can dig up for you on answers.
But i would check the temp coolant sensor next.
