While changing my oil today i noticed a bunch of grease all over. I know it looked like it was coming out of these 2 rods connected together with a grease fitting on it. My friend who helped me change the oil says its the Power steering pump leaking and that i'll need to replace it. I havent noticed any changes in the power steering or any strange noises.
The cluster of nasty grease on the tierod ends is just old grease that has been pushed out when the tierods were last greased. The normal procedure to change the grease it to pump fresh into them until grease spurts out of the boot.
Power steering fluid looks and smells like auto Trans fluid, mostly because it is. Your PS system holds very little fluid in compairson to anyother fluid. Check your PS resvior level periodically, if it drops suddenly you have a problem.
My power steering needs new fluid every so often. I hate to spend all the money on a new pump when I can just put more fluid in it. Know I'll have to do it eventually.
I replaced the power steering fluid cap on mine it was leaking from the back side it cost 3.95 from Autozone. I suspect that it was from the plastic cap aging along with trips to Canada in the middle of winter when it gets to -20C and then parked in front of my +35C house in South Carolina.
