Tansmission Codes

2000 XLT 5.4L

Just Went To The Dealer And Had My Trans Diagnosed Due To O/d Light Flashing.

Came Back With Codes P0712 And P1783.

I Was Able To Find Out What The Codes Mean. However, They Dont Seem To Reqiure A New Transmission As The Tech Recommended.

Any Suggestions And Can I Drive For A Little While To Save Some Cash In Case I Do Have To Replace The Transmission.

Thanks

Sounds to me like it just needs a new TOT sensor.

Really need to follow the diagnostic in the manual. It might be the TFT sensor in the tranny, the connector, the wiring harness, or the PCM. The purpose of the diagnostic is to pinpoint the fault so it can be repaired.

You certainly don't need a transmission based on what has been posted.

I appreciate the responses.

project,

you are exactly right as what the problems could be based on the codes.
The dealer had written on the invoice that the the tran. needs planetary gears. Would this be necessary based on the codes?

thanks

Based only on the limited information you have provided (which is likely not complete), I'd say he has a boat payment due.

Thanks Steve,

There really is not much more info to provide. I only have the info that is provided to me from the dealer and this website. That is why I'm here. Information is wealth as far as I'm concerned. Now I have that info to take with me to the next shop.

One more question. Is the truck safe to drive for a short time? Maybe 2 weeks to save some cash. I hate using credit.

Thanks
Mike

I've seen some planetary gearsets fail on 4R70W's-it was the bearing between the outer idle gears and the case that gave up due to lateral force under heavy load. When they did this-the gear kicked sideways, and broke chunks out of the side of the planetary case before jamming into the output shaft ring gear. But,there's no way that you can diagnose it by just codes-you MUST pull the pan and see what's in the pan,and do some basic hardware diagnosis.
