I have a 2000 F150 XLT 5.4, 131k Miles. A few weeks ago I attempted to start it after it had been sitting for about 4 hours. It started up and immediately shut off. Did this about 3 times. I had to keep my foot on the accelerator to get it to stay running. After it kept running it hasn't done it since. Yesterday, I was on the interstate running about 65-70 mph. When I got ready to exit off the interstate, took my foot off the accelerator, it appeared to want to shut off. I pressed accelerator slightly and it felt like it jerked a little and continued on running smoothly. When I slowed down again, it did the same thing. Did this about 3 times. Drove it the rest of the day at slow and high speeds. Hasn't done it since. No check engine light or anything. Is this a sign that the fuel pump is going or could it be the IAC/MAF? Any help is appreciated. If it is the fuel pump what should I expect to pay the dealer to repair. Oh, plugs were repaced by Ford about 8K miles ago. Thanks again.
have you gone really close to empty recently?? a little over a year ago, i let my 99 f150 go completely empty and the whole week after that i had the same problem.. try some gunmount concentrated fuel injector cleaner or complete fuel system cleaner for trucks and SUVs, maybe replace the fuel filter, some things like that.
Actually, when I thought about the cleaner I realized that I just ran some through it about 3 months ago. I decided to wait before doing that again and so far it has been doing okay. A couple of weeks ago I was on the interstate and when I slowed down to exit, it acted as though it was going to shut down. I accelerated a little and it hasn't done anything since. guess I am in a wait and see mode. Thanks.
Thanks. Now when I turn the A/C on it has a somewaht rough idle. It is not a steady idle but the RPM's will kind of go up and down and when I turn the A/C off it idles smoothly. Hopefully it is only the IAC valve. I will change that and see what happens. I have 132K miles on it and my goal is to see if I can get 250K without any major repairs. I know I will have some things go wrong but woud lilke to see if it can make it to 250K. Is that unreasonable for a 2000 5.4 engine? I keep the oil changed every 3000 miles. Thanks again for all replies.
You don't have to replace the IAC, just clean it. Spray some degreaser or parts cleaner into the two openings a let it sit for a few minutes, drain, rinse and repeat if nessesary. If you put over 100k's already on your engine, it WILL be really dirty.
I think I replaced it once already, either on my F150 or my wife's expedition. I think there is a gasket that has to be replaced once you remove the IAC, correct? I think I will try to clean it this weekend and see what happens.
