ok, i have a 96 f-250 4x4 5.8 efi. I have a chance to get a complete 70's 351w for free. i know that the cam is not hydrolic and that the cam hole is smaller on it than on my motor but if i used the comp cam conversion kit and a different cam could i bolt that bottom end on my top end? also would the 70's heads work with my efi intake and other things??
thanks
That's an expensive step backwords IMO.. why would you want to do that? Even if everything bolts up correctly.. which I'm not sure it will, it won't perform any better. Is your current motor worn out, or are you looking for more performance?
i took an 84 351w and did the same thing you wanted to do i just left it regular hydraulic non roller lifters with the appropriate cam of course and the intake will bolt on with no issues, now there will be no hole for the knock sensor, i just zip tied mine to the harness. the other thing you gotta watch out for is the timing cover/water pump. your gonna need your aluminum water pump otherwise the front brackets won't fit right. hope this helps
Yeah, not sure I'm sensing the logic here. Is it becaues of mileage? If thats the case why don't you just restore a 70s F150? You have one of the most expensive parts.
What year is this motor? if it's early 70's it'll have small combustion chambers but non hardened valve seats, if it's late 70's it's got hugh combustion chambers. None of the blocks are roller and it'll cost big bucks to convert them. If your '96 is tired, you will be much further ahead boring it 0.030" over and freshening it up. You'd be crazy to ditch that roller block...
