OK, so I'm too lazy to search the web and sort through tons of useless information. My wife's '90 XJ has air shocks. I don't notice any handling problems, or unusual tire wear. I remember hearing that some can be leak prone; I have to wonder about their effectiveness. All the same I don't want to touch any of that plastic crap until we can just replace them.
So I got to wondering, are they even sold any longer?
"MAN", now that brings back memories, back in the 70's, you could slam air shocks on anything and run a set of 50's on the back. The popular air shocks back in the day were gaberiel skyjackers, don't know if they still back them or not.
Yep, still out there and still functional, and even better, they don't leak as bad as they used too. ( laughing ) Just installed a set on a 77 El Camino a while back.
Our '97 Olds Silly minivan uses them, same look as the one's on a '65-'67 El Camino. These have 103k on them and still work. On-board compressor keeps it level regardless of load. Assume most GM with auto load leveling use a similar set up. Check Sears for airshocks, I think I saw them listed.
Keep in mind one of the hazards of airshocks for non-oem applications is the fact that your shock mounts were not designed to carry the weight. Mustangs and Cougars with any rust would pop out the top mount pretty easy....
I THINK Jaguar might still put them on their cars. Not positive. I watched an episode of Top Gear recently that originally aired either in 2005 or 2006 and they were talking about long wheelbase executive saloons. IIRC, it was a Jaguar XJ8 L and an Audi A8L that they were talking about. One commented that they would all handle terrible because they had air suspension. I'll have to find the episode and rewatch it to make sure.
