Uh oh..

I have an '82 Bronco with a '69 351 Windsor. I was told that the flex plate was the same as the '82 302 that I took out of it. The Windsor didn't have one with it so I used the one I had. Do I have the wrong one?

I'll look for the date code. When I originally pulled the 302, I replaced it with a 351 Cleveland 2V. It had the same flywheel (the weight was the same size) as the 302.

I went to Advance Auto's website a little while ago and checked part numbers between the '69 Windsor and the '82 302 (Bronco) and they had the same part number. I don't put a lot of faith in their knowledge bank though...

Also, since I'm all paranoid now, was there a difference between harmonic balancers (same engines)? I used the one that came with the engine but not sure if it was supposed to be with it or not.

I just rechecked and I was wrong; Advance Auto had different part numbers but Auto Zone had the same part number. Like I said, I don't put a lot of faith in those places...

Well just an update. I looked at a newer 302 flexplate today and measured the weight on it. Then crawled under truck and checked mine. And of course, its the same size. I could have sworn it was the same as the Cleveland but who knows, I've been wrong before. Now I have to wonder if I should pull the motor ( which would be a major hassle; low ceiling-tall truck) and replace the main bearings or just unbolt the motor (doable at my garage) and slide it foward enough to swap flexplates. It's been like this for about 5000 miles but I still have great oil pressure and no noise. Any thoughts?

Thanks, I'm going after a new one today. I think I'll just put the new one on and hope for the best. I hope I haven't ruined something. Live and learn (and spend) I guess...

Best info I have is that the big change occurred during the 1981 model year...so pre-'81 is 28oz. and post-'81 is 50oz, which leaves 1981 itself as being pretty much a toss-up.

I agree with the others...why chance it? Sounds like you may have got lucky but get one that you know is a 28-ouncer under there for security.

I have a flexplate from a late-model 5.0, 50oz. The weight on the thing is a big chunk of steel: 4-1/8" long, an inch wide and 1/2" thick. The 28 ouncer is about half that size.

Well as of last night the engine is almost out. I already had the right flywheel in the parts shed and why I didn't compare them side by side when I put the engine together is beyond me. What's odd is evey since I've had this thing running my best friend who is a mechanic has said it feels like something is out of balance. I couldn't really feel anything other than headers, glasspacks and a little bit of exhaust pipe. But just recently it's really become noticeable. Hopefully I'll have it back together in a day or two and be back with an update. Thanks everyone.
