I have a home made boat rack that I install when we head to the lake. Well I never painted it. So it has alot of surface rust on it. Question is, do i need sand all the rust off, primer it then paint it? Or is there some kind of paint that will cover the rust. I think I know the answer put thought I would ask.
I would sand it and then paint it or you could have it bead or sand blasted.
Not too long ago my neighbor was treating some rusted metal with some spray on stuff that he got at Wally World. He just sprayed it on and the rust turned black. It was like a primer coating. He then painted right over it. You might try that.
There are several versions of rustoleom paint that you can use, available at home depot. It will last for awhile and then start chipping off. You might be suprised at what it would cost to have it powder coated, pretty reasonable and will last a lifetime.
Here in Kodiak Alaska with all the road salt and sea salt from high winds everything rusts. The only solution I found to battle rust and give a hard protective coating is POR-15. I painted and restored an old 73 Bronco with it. I mean I painted the entire thing with it and it still looks good.
you can dissasemble it and put the pieces in baking soda/water and a electrical charge through it. This way doesn't remove metal, just rust unlike sanding, and is way cheaper then beadblasting.
