Replacing Mechanical Fuel Pump

I have an 82 Ford Bronco, 302 and I have a Fram see-through fuel filter just after my fuel pump. She wouldnt start the other day(she would turn over but not fire up) so I replaced the fuel filters and still no luck, I noticed that there was no gas at all in the see-through fuel filter after trying to start here a couple times. Im going to replace the mechanical fuel pump, Im a little hesitant, is there anything I need to know before I do this, I was told that the if the cam(correct?) isnt in the right position then the pump wont fit in ( due to the lever arm on the fuel pump) and you would have to "rotate" the engine some to get things lined up and then the pump will fit right in, does this sound correct, I wont be able to actually look straight into the mounting hole for the pump and see what is going on. Any advice or tips would be appreciated.
